Anyone who has ever driven into a speedway oval knows the feeling. You, the machine, the sky, the earth under the studs and your throttle grip. Switch on the popometer and off you go. Always turn left and keep going.
The Golden Hotshoe Day in Brokstedt in mid-July this year was another great opportunity to experience this. The nice people from "Single and Twin - Classic Motorcycles" organize this incomparable event every year. Lovingly organized and producing real anticipation - top-notch.
The host is the MSC Brokstedt - a speedway club steeped in tradition that has been providing endless support to flat track fans for years. The track is watered, leveled, roasted and tapped. Track marshals and medical staff are on hand.
If you plan your weekends in the north, you can't miss Brokstedt. Simply watch a training session, visit a race weekend or experience the legendary parts market at the Holsteinring.
At the Golden Hotshoe Day you can choose from several classes. Complete beginners can get a taste of the sport without any pressure. Experienced riders on real historic special frames come together. This also makes the whole thing interesting for spectators. When do you ever see the legendary Harley, Norton, Triumph or Yamaha machines of the 60s and 70s in full use?
However, most of the machines are conversions based on current youngtimers. Single-cylinder two-cylinder - slimmed down and fitted with 19" wheels. That's all you need to get started in the flattrack world. Suzuki DR, Honda XL and a conspicuous number of SR500s can be discovered. XT600, XS650, Honda Hawk in a Morini frame? Hammer!
Our friends from "Red Hot Chili Customs" from Szczecin were also on site and worked with filmer "theone.szczecin" captured the weekend on video. RHCC maker Redu is the father of the incredibly great "Scrambler Fever" Festivals that we have already reported on. Motorcycle people through and through. Super successful video as we think. Thank you guys and gals!
In flat track racing, a lot is demanded of the engines in a short space of time. All the more fascinating the sight of the vintage class machines. In Brokstedt, a JAP from 1929 was the Methuselah - but Harley WL, AWO or even BSA and Norton from the 40s to 60s are more likely to be seen in a museum or on a Sunday ride than in a stress test. That was an experience.
There was also something for the speed junkies. The "speed squad" really let the dirt fly on DTX bikes - converted current crossers. Here it was all about the whole thing. You have to be able to ride - "cup or hospital" would be an exaggeration, but the group showed real ambition.
The Golden Hotshoe Day has an advantage over the usual training for club members: the "Absolute Beginner", "Street Bike" and "Moped" classes give every newcomer the opportunity to do their first laps on the flat track. Even those who have never, never, never ridden an oval or a street bike or a moped at all. Careers are born here. This is where people get started.
