Water and suspended particles in the fuel are poison for a decent running engine. The float needle valve in the carburetor can quickly become faulty. We therefore advise you to check the fuel tap regularly. The water trap with Filter insert 50666 can be combined with the Double ring wrench 31037 easily and conveniently. If you open the reserve function and then find water and dirt here, you need to take action. The reserve function of the tap literally gets everything out of your tank. Even the heavy substances that you don't want to find in the float chamber.
The inside of the tap can be very susceptible to corrosion. Even the brass of the tube can be affected by pitting if contaminated gasoline has a galvanic party with water, rust and the aluminum-zinc alloy of the tap material. The sealing surfaces to the valve disk and the O-ring can be polished well. Oxide and the like must be removed, otherwise the chances of reliable operation are very small.
When fitting all the seals, please note that they first swell and soften when they come into contact with gasoline in order to provide full tightness. It will also be quite difficult to operate the selector lever at first. We never assemble our fuel taps completely dry.
Ignored long enough, a fuel tap can be in pretty poor condition. Dirt, grime and corrosion. Catastrophic. This disrupts the work of the carburetor enormously and leads to difficulties.

Intact filter screens in the fuel tap are also an important insurance for the XT500 if you like to take the XT off-road or on trips.
