Wheels & Wake 2024 - The review

The sprint in the sand - a special discipline that needs to be tackled with special equipment

Friesland's biggest beach party calls for competition for the 1/32 mile. New ideas are launched every year. And 2024 was no exception.

We captured the atmosphere on camera for you. Check out our YouTube channel. There's more to see. Thanks to Tingel and Sandro for the clip. The pictures are from Martin Hass.

Between tattoos and tasty cocktails, there are plenty of technical treats to discover.

It wasn't our first time in Nethen in Friesland. The beach club with its white sand conjures up a real California feeling. Chrome, paint and polished aluminum wherever you look. It smells of clutch but also of sausage and waffles. Hands up - weekend. Wheels & Wake - here we go.

Custom bikes hard on the gas

Strandsprint is very close to flat track racing. Accordingly, many single cylinders are used here - with success. Light and slim and equipped with a lot of torque, they are ideal for covering the round 50 meters in a flash. There can be a good 25 hp between a standard SR and an engineer's piece.

Fritz THE CAPTAIN Schmidt. Patient Zero of the W&W and first winner in 2018. Today the figurehead, lucky charm and busy photogenic Orgateam member.

Support in high tech is always welcome. KEDO supplied "Hombrese Bikes"  countless engine components and a razor-sharp digital ignition for speeds of up to 10,000 RPM.

The 74th winner's number in Nethen. The first places in 2021-2023 were won on this SR. Only double world champion Uwe "Hombrese" Kostrewa builds and rides SR to perfection. His Steffi the "Speedgirl" was on the podium in 2021. Both are also and mainly involved in flattrack racing. In addition to technology, Uwe attaches great importance to good design. His machines exude the spirit of the racing events of the 70s and 80s. Surfaces and lettering, technical details, everything is touched and defined.

Winner 2024: Louis "Young Gun" Wiegand - On SR500

What father Alex Winkler here is a real milestone in SR500 tuning. We are keeping a close eye on the scene. Nothing has been left untouched here.

His motto for this SR500 conversion: Anything that costs power or weighs too much: Out!

The result has only two gears, a dry clutch, wet sump lubrication, a lot of compression and lots of ponies. Departure in the direction of Potest. That worked.
Congratulations Louis! Hats off, Alex!

A party at the stopwatch. In the sun.

Doing is like wanting - only more blatant. Lightly screwed and turned up: a slim SRX6 in the sand.

That could almost be 23 inches. An old HONDA XL probably donated the front wheel. Or maybe not. Unfortunately, we couldn't talk to the builder. He left too quickly.

The flag woman is not afraid of sore muscles. Starts every minute. That was hard work.

The number of SR500s deployed increases every year. Project costs and performance speak for themselves. If you look at the podium places of the last few years, a lot becomes clear. The picture is similar in Falttrack Sport. Yamaha SR and Honda Singles dominate the entry-level and vintage classes.

The party will be back again in 2025.

From September 11-14, 2025, the Wheels & Wake Festival will once again take place at Beachclub Nethen.

The parallel event in Bockhorn Flattrack Friday Night in the MSC Moorwinkelsdamm stadium will once again thrill the crowds. Pure racing feeling. Accessible paddock, competent moderation, battle for every bend. Different classes make room for vintage flat trackers, modern DTX bikes based on crossers, custom-built bikes.

You have to experience it live: Flattrack action under floodlights. Make a note of the date and be there!

In 2nd place in the 1/32 Mile Race: The XS650 with Alex Winklerwho also built his son's winning SR. Swabian precision - completely unleashed. Old Yamahas are always good for an official adrenaline rush.

It is what it is:

The "Wheels & Wake" festival celebrates motorcycles and beach life like no other event in Germany.

And here in the north.

We were at the Scrambler Fever in Poland last weekend and it was really good again! 2 days of rattling through the woods with about 70 other enduro enthusiasts. Due to the extreme drought, many forest roads were a sandy hell. Everyone cursed about it, many crashed but everyone had a big grin on their face afterwards. More about this event soon....
